What the Heck is a Listicle?

In one day you’ll reassess your purpose mission and vision. You’ll reassess your ideal client with respect to your competitors and high value customers and update your Unique Sales proposition to eliminate competition. And you’ll create a strategic plan to move your business to levels you’ve not yet considered.

Have you ever messed up your story when someone asks you a question and you can’t remember where you were? You’re story pattern was interrupted.

It’s called a pattern interrupt and in the case of your story it’s a momentary distraction. But pattern interrupts are highly effective for creativity, growth, expansion and change.

Early in my career I listened to the “Psychology of Selling” by Brian Tracy.

He shared a story about shatterproof glass salesperson. Placing a piece of glass on a buyers desk the salesperson proceeds to slam the glass with a hammer, instantly startling the buyer. The glass however remains unbroken. The buyer is now fully engaged. He’s not thinking of anything else.

Buyers, like all the rest of us are busy and get caught up in routines, behavior patterns and habit sequences.

If you’re a busy small business owner wearing many hats, like the rest of us, this happens all day long. It’s your version of autopilot. It makes your brain more efficient. But some times you can be so efficient that you tune out conscious thought.

Usually habits are useful. You get dressed, drive, walk, clean your teeth in ways that don’t need much mental attention. But patterns can also be a downfall. You can eat mindlessly and therefore overeat. You can tune out important people and not hear important messages. You can exercise without paying attention and hurt yourself.

Use a pattern interrupt whenever you want to change results. A pattern can be interrupted by any unexpected or sudden movement or response. Listicle, in the title of this video, is a verbal pattern interrupt. It doesn’t fit with normal vocabulary. Momentary confusion is experienced. This confusion state can makes you open to suggestion – where you are willing to trade your uncomfortable state for another’s clarity.

It’s HELPFUL.. to interrupt your routines when stuck in an un-resourceful state. Like getting caught in a negative spiral when things don’t turn out as we want.
Or even when we are stuck in a rut. The routines for delivering daily outcomes don’t work for creativity, growth, expansion or change.

When you’re trying to grow your business and change your results for the better you need new ideas and concepts. Here are five strategies for creating a pattern interrupt in your routines.

1. Humor or laughter – Works every time

2. Go for a walk – Take time out

3. Go to work a different way

4. Take time off from usual activity

5. Sleep on it.

Apply a pattern interrupt to change your results.
