A Business Leader’s Opportunity to Influence Good: When Fear Fades, Compassion Rises

World Homeless Day may be behind us, but the opportunity to influence good is right in front of us—every day.

For me, this hits close to home.

Growing up in Orange County in the 1970s, I never saw the homeless. Life was stable, predictable. You might hear about “Skid Row” down in L.A., but that felt like a different world. Then the Great Recession hit, and I’ll never forget driving by the Santa Ana River and seeing tents stretching for miles. Families. Veterans. People who once had jobs and dreams—all trying to survive.

That image never left me.

Today, I see homelessness up close here in Portland. I occasionally serve dinner downtown at the Portland Rescue Mission , and I teach and mentor weekly at The Harbor , their residential recovery and life-restoration center. I’ve also shared my Culture of Success message there—helping men rediscover purpose and confidence as they rebuild their lives.

And here’s what I’ve learned: I walk in to give, but I walk out filled with joy.

Because generosity isn’t a transaction—it’s a transformation.

It changes the person who receives and the person who gives.
It turns fear into faith, and compassion into courage.

The Business Owner’s Advantage: An Opportunity to Influence Good

As business owners and leaders, we’re in a unique position to influence good— and not just within our walls.

We have employees who look to us for direction.
We have service providers who follow our lead.
We have customers who notice what we stand for.

And we have resources that, when used wisely, can make a tremendous difference.

Your company’s revenue isn’t just for payroll and profit. It’s a vehicle for impact.

A portion of your business can become a source of tax-advantaged giving to local missions, youth programs, or community initiatives that help people rebuild their lives.

And when your team sees you leading with generosity—whether that’s volunteering together, donating, or simply spreading kindness—it shifts the culture. It reminds everyone that business isn’t just about transactions; it’s about transformation.

Business owners have an opportunity to influence not just their teams but their entire communities.

Faith, Not Fear: Turning Every Challenge into an Opportunity to Influence

I’ve discovered that fear and faith can’t live in the same heart.

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.” —1 John 4:18

When I walk into The Harbor to teach, I’m reminded that the men I meet aren’t statistics—they’re stories. And when we give, whether through time, talent, or treasure, we become part of their redemption story.

Every act of generosity—big or small—builds a bridge back to humanity.

Each act of generosity is an opportunity to influence culture from the inside out.

A Challenge to Every Business Leader

This week, I’d like to challenge you:
Yellow hand pointing left.Identify one opportunity to give.
Yellow hand pointing left.Share this message with your employees, service providers, or customers.
Yellow hand pointing left.Encourage your team to serve or support a local mission.

Because love isn’t passive—it’s courage in action.

When business owners lead with compassion, they change the conversation.
When they give, they multiply hope.
And when they use their influence for good, they leave a legacy that outlasts any ledger.

Because when fear fades, compassion rises.
And that’s what real leadership looks like.

In business leadership, that’s called job hugging — holding tight to something that once fit but no longer does. Your knuckles ache.
